LightKone comes to an end and obtains a positive score in the final evaluation

The European project LightKone obtained a positive score in the European Commission’s final evaluation. According to the reviewers, “the project provided valuable results for the scientific community”.

LightKone started in January 2017 and ended in December 2019. The main goal of the project was the development of a scientifically thorough and industrially validated model, capable of providing distributed computing in peripheral networks. It enables faster response times for users, namely when compared to more classic solutions with centralised data centres.

Among the technologies developed, we would like to highlight new database models (AntidoteDB), systems that allow direct synchronisation of web browsers on a local network, without requiring a connection to a central server (Legion), and convergent data models (CRDTs) that have been adopted and incorporated in several programming languages (used in games like League of Legends and Angry Birds).

The technologies and results developed in the project were explored through demonstrators that support use cases. More specifically, Scality explored geo-replicated storage, Peer Stritzinger updated RFIDs in the manufacturing system, Gluck Advice tested the technologies developed in precision agriculture and, finally, Guifi.net explored the results of a monitoring process with a community internet network with more than 36.000 machines.

It is important to mention that most of the technologies developed are available in open source repositories, and to all interested parties. In addition, the project produced an open document – “LightKone Reference Architecture” (LiRA) – that comprehends and presents the project proposals, and their relation with other reference architectures, to the public. The following institutions were part of the project consortium: UCL (Belgium), UPMC and Scality (France), INESC TEC and NovaLincs (Portugal), TUK and Peer Stritzinger (Germany), UPC and Guifi.net(Spain) and Gluk Advice (Netherlands).

The evaluation meeting took place on the premises of the European Commission, in Belgium, on January 24.

Paper of LightKone accepted at ESOP 2020

The paper “Proving the safety of highly-available distributed objects” was accepted at ESOP 2020. The paper was written by our partners from UPMC and the conference will take place in Dublin, Ireland, between 25 and 30 April.

LightKone researcher participated at Code BEAM Lite

Our researcher Igor Kopestenski, from UC Louvain, gave a talk at Code BEAM Lite Amsterdam about Achlys and LiRA. The talk entitled “IoT edge computing with bare-metal Erlang and was held in the city of Amsterdam on December 28, 2019.

LightKone researcher presents paper at IEEE SOCA 2019

The paper entitled “DIMON: Distributed Monitoring System for Decentralized Edge Clouds in Guifi.net” was presented last week at the 12th IEEE International Conference on Service Oriented Computing and Applications (SOCA 2019), which was held in Taiwan, between 18 and 21 November.

SOCA 2019 provides an international forum for researchers from multiple disciplines to exchange and share their experiences, ideas, and latest research results on all aspects of service-oriented computing. The conference includes three days of parallel-track program, special-topic workshops, keynotes and tutorials, and panel discussion.

The authors of this paper are Roger Pueyo Centelles, Mennan Selimi, Felix Freitag and Leandro Navarro, from Polytechnic University of Catalonia.

Paper of LightKone accepted in International Journal of Communication Systems

LightKone project has one new article that was accepted in the International Journal of Communication Systems. The paper entitled “e-LiteSense: Self-adaptive Energy-aware Data Sensing in WSN Environments” is authored by João Marco Silva, Paulo Carvalho, Kalil Bispo, and Solange Lima.
